More than one million vehicles from Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Stellantis are being recalled due to issues with some rearview-facing cameras. The recalls cover various models and years of these brands. In the case of Stellantis, approximately 1.2 million vehicles in the US and Canada are affected by a software glitch that can disable rearview cameras.
The malfunctioning cameras prevent the rearview image from displaying on affected cars' media screens, increasing potential crash risk and decreasing driver visibility. Some of the impacted vehicles were built with radio software that may prevent the rearview camera signal from passing through to the media screen, causing the image to stop displaying.
The recall covers 19 different makes and models from Chrysler, including certain Jeep Compass, Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneers; Ram ProMaster vans and Ram 3500 chassis cabs; 1500 pickups and 2500 pickups; Chrysler Pacifica minivans from model years 2021 to 2023, and Dodge Durango SUVs from model years 2021 and 2023.
Stellantis plans to fix the issue with a software update. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified via mail, while some have already received the update. The NHTSA encourages car owners to check their vehicle's status on their website or through USA TODAY's recall database for more information.

This recall comes after Stellantis had to recall over 200,000 SUVs and pickup trucks last week due to a separate software malfunction that could cause stability control failure.
Honda recalled nearly 200,00 Tesla also recalled about 237,564 vehicles in January due to issues with rearview and backup cameras respectively.
Ford Motor and Range Rover have also recalled vehicles with faulty backup cameras in the last year.

The software issue was found to affect radio software which can inadvertently shut down the cameras.
Stellantis has no reports of injuries or crashes related to this issue, but is urging owners to follow the recall instructions.
