The 2024 Olympic Wrestling Trials took place on April 19-20 in State College, Pennsylvania, with a plethora of talented wrestlers competing for a chance to represent the United States in the Paris Games. Among the notable winners were Spencer Lee, Zain Retherford, Kyle Dake, Aaron Brooks, and Kyle Snyder. The trials featured both men's and women's freestyle wrestling as well as men's Greco-Roman wrestling. A total of 13 out of the 18 weight classes were qualified for the Paris Olympics through this event.
The trials followed a format where a single-elimination challenge tournament was held on Friday to advance wrestlers to Saturday's best-of-three finals series in each division. The early rounds took place from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., while the challenge tournament semifinals and finals were held between 6:30 and 10 p.m.
One of the standout performers of the trials was Jax Forrest, a high school wrestler from Bishop McCort, who qualified for the US National Team and finished fourth in his division. During the trials, Forrest managed to secure wins over a former Division I wrestler and a two-time Division II champion. He also faced former Illinois wrestler Zane Richards, who forfeited to Forrest.
In addition to the main events, several other athletes made their mark at the trials. Zain Retherford won the Men's Freestyle 65 kg category, while Kyle Dake emerged victorious in the Men's Freestyle 74 kg category. Aaron Brooks claimed victory in the Men's Freestyle 86 kg category, and Kyle Snyder won the Men's Freestyle 97 kg category. Mason Parris triumphed in the Women's Freestyle 125 kg category.
The trials also saw some surprising absences, such as reigning Olympic and world champion in men's freestyle at 86kg, David Taylor, and reigning Olympic and world champion in men's freestyle at 97kg, Kyle Snyder. Additionally, 2016 Olympic champion in women's freestyle at 57kg Helen Maroulis and six-time world champion in women's freestyle at 76kg Adeline Gray did not participate.
Overall, the 2024 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials were a showcase of exceptional talent and determination as wrestlers fought for their chance to represent their country on the biggest stage. The winners of 13 out of the 18 weight classes qualified for the Paris Olympics, while those who did not secure a spot will have another chance to qualify at international tournaments in May in Turkiye.
