An 83-year-old woman from Greenville, South Carolina was gored by a bison near Storm Point Trail at Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park on June 1, 2024.

An 83-year-old woman from Greenville, South Carolina sustained serious injuries after being gored by a bison near Storm Point Trail at Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park on June 1, 2024. The incident occurred when the bison was defending its space and came within a few feet of the woman. The woman was first transported to Lake Medical Clinic for treatment before being flown by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for further care.

Bison are known to be unpredictable animals that can run three times faster than humans. They will defend their space when threatened and have injured more people in Yellowstone National Park than any other animal. Visitors are advised to give wildlife, including bison, a wide berth and stay at least 25 yards away from all large animals and 100 yards away from bears and wolves.

This is not the first time an incident of this nature has occurred in Yellowstone National Park. In June 2023, a bull bison gored a man from Colorado, injuring his arm. A month prior to that, a woman from Ohio was also gored by a bison and thrown 10 feet in the air.

Bison are not aggressive animals but will defend their space when threatened. Visitors are reminded to respect wildlife and view them from a safe distance. The safety of both the animals and visitors depends on everyone using good judgment and following these simple rules.
