A tragic shooting occurred at Perry High School in Iowa on the first day back from holiday break, leaving one student dead and five others injured. The suspect, identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities believe that Butler acted alone and had made social media posts around the time of the shooting.
The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday morning, before classes began. Students were forced to take shelter as reports of an active shooter came in at 07:37 local time (13:37 GMT). The first officer arrived on scene within minutes and found Butler with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

An improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered at Perry High School by investigators and rendered safe. Butler was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small caliber handgun, according to police.
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting. Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) responded to the scene.
Perry High School shares a campus with Perry Middle School, where students in sixth grade attend classes. The middle school was cleared at about 08:25 local time and the high school was cleared at 08:27 local time.
