A24's dystopian thriller 'Civil War' continued its box office dominance in its second weekend, earning $11.12 million and maintaining the top spot against three new releases.
The film, directed by Alex Garland and starring Kirsten Dunst as a photojournalist traversing a divided United States, has generated $44.8 million so far. With a price tag of $50 million, it is A24's most expensive production to date.
Meanwhile, Universal's horror film 'Abigail,' starring Alisha Weir as a pre-teen vampire, opened slightly below expectations with $10.2 million in its debut. The R-rated movie features the young actress playing a ballerina vampire who bites, beheads, stabs and bursts through doors.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE magazine, Weir revealed that her family and friends were shocked by her role in the film. She plays a character named Abigail who is targeted by kidnappers seeking ransom but soon turns out to be a centuries-old lethal vampire forever stuck in a child's body.
The competition between 'Civil War' and 'Abigail' was tight, with the latter earning $4 million from 3,384 theaters on its opening day. However, after factoring out preview screenings, A24's dystopian thriller remained in the lead.
Lionsgate's 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,' starring Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens, is projected to have a 56% drop in its second weekend. The film follows a heist team that must navigate World War II-era Europe while dealing with unexpected challenges.
As for potential sequels, if 'Abigail' gets one, Melissa Barrera could play a dream creature based on her character Joey's connection with the vampire Abigail.
