Adobe, a leading creative software company, has recently announced the addition of new generative AI tools to its flagship product, Photoshop. The latest update includes features such as Text to Image, improved Generative Fill experience with Adobe Firefly Image 3 Model, Reference Image tool for visual inspiration, Generate Similar for producing more relevant content, and Generate Background for automatically removing and replacing backgrounds. These new tools aim to make the creative process easier and more efficient for both professionals and enthusiasts.
According to Adobe's press release, over 7 billion images have been generated using Firefly's generative AI models since their introduction. The latest update brings significant improvements to the existing features, allowing users to create higher quality results with greater control and precision.
Erin Boyce, Photoshop's senior marketing director, stated in an interview with Engadget that the new tools will make using Photoshop easier for both professionals and casual enthusiasts who may have found the app's learning curve to be steep. The Text to Image feature allows users to translate words into photorealistic images, while the improved Generative Fill experience offers better photographic image quality and precise controls.
Additionally, the Reference Image tool enables users to use visual inspiration for generative AI results, reducing randomness and dependency on text prompts. The Generate Similar feature allows users to produce more relevant content by selecting a variation and generating similar results. Lastly, the Generate Background feature automatically removes and replaces backgrounds with generated content that matches the lighting, shadows, and perspective of the subject.
Anna McNaught from Adobe also highlighted in her blog post that these new generative AI tools are part of a landmark year for Adobe. The company has been building on its rich history of innovation and strong foundation of generative AI with Adobe Firefly, which was introduced last year.
Ely Greenfield, chief technology officer for Digital Media at Adobe, told The Verge that prompting is a pain in the butt and that users can now use reference images instead to guide the results generated by Photoshop's AI. This prevents frequent adjustments to text prompts and speeds up the creative process.
The new generative AI tools are available via the Photoshop beta desktop app, with general availability expected later this year. Adobe also announced that its third-generation Firefly model, which has higher-quality image generation capabilities compared to its predecessor, is now available in a public, global beta for anyone to try outside of Photoshop via the Firefly web application.
