US Women's Soccer Legend Alex Morgan Misses Out on Paris Olympics Roster
Alex Morgan, a US women's soccer legend and one of the most accomplished players in program history, has been left out of the 2024 Olympic roster. The news was announced by new head coach Emma Hayes on June 26, 2024.
Morgan, who turns 35 next week, is fifth on the US career scoring list with a total of 123 goals in her 224 appearances for the national team. She has been a member of two World Cups and one Olympic Games. Morgan co-captained the US squad during their successful campaign at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
However, with only 16 non-goalkeepers permitted in the Olympic roster, Hayes had to make some tough decisions. Morgan's recent form and production have been below her usual standards, which may have influenced her exclusion from the team.
The US women's soccer team will be undergoing a generational shift following the retirements of Megan Rapinoe and Julie Ertz last year. A number of young players have emerged in recent times, including Mallory Swanson, Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman, Jaedyn Shaw, and Catarina Macario.
The US women's soccer team will face Zambia, Germany, and Australia in the group stage of the Paris Olympics. The squad will be looking to add another medal to their impressive collection.
