Andy Murray's Farewell Tour at Wimbledon Begins with a Loss in Doubles
Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and his older brother Jamie began their farewell tour at the All England Club with a first-round defeat in the men's doubles on Thursday. The Murrays lost 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 to Australian pair Rinky Hijikata and John Peers.
Despite undergoing back surgery just twelve days prior, Andy Murray participated in the match, relying heavily on his service game due to limited mobility. The emotional farewell ceremony for Murray was held shortly after the match on Centre Court. Former BBC presenter Sue Barker conducted the ceremony where Murray thanked his family, team members over the years, and fans for their continued support.
Murray is set to retire this summer but will make his final bow at the Paris Olympics in mixed doubles with fellow British Grand Slam champion Emma Raducanu. The brothers spent their childhood years playing tennis at their local club in Dunblane, where their mother, Judy, was the club coach.
Andy Murray's impressive career includes winning Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016 and a gold medal at the London Olympics in 2012. He is Scotland's most successful tennis player.
The Centre Court crowd showed their appreciation for Murray with standing ovations throughout the match, making it an emotional experience for both players and fans alike.
Murray thanked his team of physios and fitness trainers for their support throughout his post-surgery career. He also expressed gratitude to Wimbledon organizers for the emotional farewell ceremony.
