The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly in the process of selecting a new head coach, and Anthony Davis is expected to have a significant role in the decision-making process. According to multiple sources, Dan Hurley of UConn has emerged as a leading candidate for the position.
Hurley, who has won back-to-back NCAA championships with UConn, has expressed his desire to explore partnerships with successful basketball franchises. The Lakers have also reportedly been impressed with Hurley's sophisticated offensive actions and high-level player development system.
The Lakers began their search for a new head coach after parting ways with Darvin Ham following the team's first-round playoff exit in 2024. Since the beginning of the process, they have had long-term goals in mind for this hire.
Hurley has a strong coaching background, having previously coached at various college levels including Saint Benedict's Preparatory School, Wagner College, University of Rhode Island, and UConn. He currently holds a 141-58 record with the Huskies and is the reigning Naismith Coach of the Year.
Despite his success in college basketball, Hurley reportedly turned down a huge offer from Kentucky earlier this year. The Lakers are now preparing to offer him a massive, long-term contract to join their organization.
The Lakers' search for a new head coach comes as they look to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season and contend for an NBA championship with LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the way. The team has not reached the NBA Finals or won a title since 2020.
