Apple's long-awaited artificial intelligence (AI) features, collectively known as Apple Intelligence, were first introduced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 in Cupertino, California on June 10, 2024. The suite of AI tools is designed to enhance Siri's capabilities and provide automatic email and image generation along with notification sorting.
As of now, Apple Intelligence is only available to registered Apple developers who have access to the developer beta versions of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and MacOS 18.1.
The first version of Apple Intelligence includes several notable features such as a new Siri look with a glowing edge around the phone, improved Siri functionality that can understand commands even when the speaker stumbles over their words, Siri's ability to answer troubleshooting questions about Apple products, better photos search and movie creation capabilities, and AI-generated summaries for Mail and Messages with voicemail transcriptions.
Additionally, Writing Tools – Apple's text-generation service – is also part of the first version of Apple Intelligence. However, some features like image generation, emoji generation, automated photos clean up, OpenAI ChatGPT integration, and other Siri improvements are not yet available in the developer beta.
Apple Intelligence is expected to be released to the public later this year. The 18.1 version number suggests that it will not be launched alongside new iPhone hardware which is anticipated to debut running iOS 18 in the fall.
The integration of AI with Apple's operating system has generated excitement among investors, who believe it could lead to a significant wave of upgrades in the coming years. Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan wrote in a note that this iPhone cycle is expected to remain strong for longer as AI feature sets improve in the 2025 iPhone.
