Apple, the tech giant known for its innovative products, has recently reclassified several of its devices as 'vintage'. According to Apple's definition, a product becomes vintage when it has not been in distribution for more than five and less than seven years. The devices that have been given this designation include the iPhone X, first-generation AirPods, and the original HomePod.
The iPhone X was released on November 3, 2017. It marked a significant milestone for Apple as it introduced several groundbreaking features such as an edge-to-edge display, Face ID authentication system, A11 Bionic chip with Neural Engine for machine learning capabilities, wireless charging support and a premium design. The iPhone X was priced at $349.
The first-generation AirPods were officially released on December 13, 2016. They were the first truly wireless earbuds to be a big hit due to their seamless integration with Apple's ecosystem facilitated by the custom W1 chip for effortless pairing, long battery life and efficient wireless connectivity.
The HomePod was released on February 9, 2018. It featured high-quality audio integration with Apple's ecosystem including Apple Music and AirPlay. The HomePod was powered by the Apple A8 chip enabling real-time acoustic modeling, audio beamforming and multi-channel echo cancellation.
Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers continue to offer repairs for vintage products up to two more years subject to parts availability.
Despite being considered vintage, these devices remain significant milestones in Apple's history. The iPhone X introduced several new features that have since become standard in smartphones. The first-generation AirPods paved the way for truly wireless earbuds and the HomePod showcased Apple's commitment to high-quality audio.
