Apple is set to release new iPhone models in 2024 and 2025, bringing significant upgrades to the telephoto cameras. According to various reports and analyst predictions, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have identical telephoto lenses with a 5x optical zoom.
The upcoming models are expected to launch in September 2024, with component shipments estimated to increase by about 160% due to the inclusion of the same camera in both sizes. This upgrade is likely a response to customer demand for improved telephoto capabilities and increased competition from other smartphone manufacturers.
Looking further ahead, the high-end iPhone 17 model, due in late 2025, is predicted to have an even more advanced tetraprism camera with a larger sensor size (1/2.6inch) for improved image quality and low-light sensitivity. However, it's uncertain whether this upgraded camera will be available on both sizes of the iPhone 17.
The iPhone 19, launching in 2027, may receive a significant upgrade to its telephoto camera with an increased optical range. This upgrade could involve more prisms to increase the length of the light path and enable greater than 5x optical zoom.
Apple's decision to overhaul the Face ID system for the iPhone 16 series has led to Coherent, a main customer for Apple's microchip plant in the UK, closing down. The new Face ID system is expected to feature a much smaller module than before, potentially allowing for a smaller Dynamic Island.
In terms of charging speeds, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to offer faster wired and wireless charging capabilities. However, users will need to purchase new chargers separately for these upgraded speeds.
These changes reflect Apple's commitment to staying competitive in the smartphone market by addressing customer demands for improved camera capabilities, faster charging speeds, and smaller design elements.
