Abreu Optioned to Minors: Astros Send Struggling First Baseman to West Palm Beach

HOUSTON - The Houston Astros have made the decision to option struggling first baseman José Abreu to their spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Florida. The move comes after a disappointing start to the season for Abreu, who has recorded just seven hits in his first 71 at-bats and struck out 18 times. Both sides agreed that this was the best course of action following a 'great' conversation between Abreu, coaching staff, and front office members.

Despite his struggles, Abreu has more than five years of major-league service time and must give consent before being optioned. Astros general manager Dana Brown did not offer a timetable for Abreu's return to the majors but plans to monitor his progress in Florida.

Abreu, who is in the second year of a three-year, $58.5 million contract, expressed frustration and embarrassment about his paltry production since arriving in Houston. Brown described their conversation as 'great' and noted that Abreu was receptive to the decision.

The Astros selected Joey Loperfido from Triple-A Sugar Land to fill in for Abreu at first base. Loperfido will likely play some first base, but Brown indicated that he would mostly be used in the outfield.

José Abreu is a three-time All-Star and former American League MVP winner. He spent his previous nine MLB seasons with the Chicago White Sox before joining the Astros last year.
