The incidents have raised concerns about the security of infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
The Kremlin stated it was too early to determine who was responsible for the damage.

On October 23, 2023, an underwater gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea was found damaged, with an anchor discovered nearby. The pipeline, known as Nord Stream 2, is a significant infrastructure project that carries gas from Russia to Germany. The Finnish Border Guard retrieved the anchor from the seabed near the damaged pipeline. The anchor, weighing approximately 3 tons, was found about 120 meters from the pipeline. The pipeline's operator, Nord Stream 2 AG, reported a drop in pressure in the pipeline, leading to the discovery of the damage.

In a separate incident, a power cable between Sweden and Lithuania was also damaged. The Swedish government stated that Estonia has linked the damage to the Baltic cable and the pipeline. However, the Estonian Foreign Ministry has not confirmed this link.

The Kremlin was asked about the damaged Baltic pipeline and responded that it was too early to say who was responsible for the damage. The Kremlin also stated that it was necessary to wait for the results of the investigation. The Central European Policy Analysis (CEPA) reported that this was not the first time such incidents have occurred in the Baltic Sea, referring to them as 'Baltic Sea Saboteurs'.

The incidents have raised concerns about the security of infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. The pipeline and cable damages are currently under investigation.
