The Baltimore Orioles made two significant trades on July 26, 2024, to strengthen their rotation and bullpen. In the first deal, they acquired right-hander Zach Eflin from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for three minor leaguers: Matthew Etzel, Jackson Baumeister, and Mac Horvath. Eflin is a 30-year-old pitcher with a career ERA of 4.09 and has been signed through 2025.
The Orioles also obtained outfielder Cristian Pache and right-hander Seranthony Domínguez from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for outfielder Austin Hays. Hays had a terrible start to the season and was placed on the injured list with a left calf strain in April.
Eflin has been a consistent performer throughout his career, allowing an average of 4.01 earned runs per nine frames since 2018. His strikeout rate and ground ball rate were both close to league averages during that time period.
The Rays signed Eflin to a $40 million, three-year deal before the 2023 season, and he went on to have a strong year with a 3.50 ERA and career highs in strikeouts (186) and innings pitched (177⅔).
The Phillies, meanwhile, continue to act as sellers after dealing outfielder Randy Arozarena to Seattle for a pair of minor league prospects: right-handed pitcher Brody Hopkins and outfielder Aidan Smith. Tampa Bay was 52-51 entering play on July 26.
The Orioles, who are leading the AL East, had been dealing with injuries to starting pitchers Kyle Bradish, John Means, and Tyler Wells. Eflin's acquisition will provide much-needed depth to their rotation for both the remainder of the 2024 season and beyond.
The Rays obtained outfielder Matthew Etzel, right-hander Jackson Baumeister, and utilityman Mac Horvath from Baltimore in the Zach Eflin trade. Horvath was ranked as Baltimore's No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline, and Baumeister was No. 17.
