The Billboard Music Awards 2023, which took a digital-only approach, has been met with mixed reactions from fans and artists alike. The awards were shared via clips of performances and artists' wins on Billboard's website and social media channels, instead of a traditional broadcast or livestream. This new format, described as a 'reimagined award show concept', faced criticism from fans who experienced technical difficulties and were unhappy with the lack of a livestream. Critics on X, formerly Twitter, expressed their dissatisfaction and asked for a return to the traditional format.
Despite the controversy surrounding the format, the awards saw Taylor Swift and Morgan Wallen emerge as the biggest winners. Swift took home 10 awards, including Top Artist, Top Female Artist, and Top Billboard 200 Artist. This achievement follows the success of her 2022 album 'Midnights', which saw 10 of its tracks occupy the top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100. With these wins, Swift is now tied with Drake for the most wins in BBMAs history and the Top Artist category.
Morgan Wallen, on the other hand, won 11 awards, including Best Male Artist and Best Country Male Artist. Other notable winners included Drake, The Weeknd, SZA, Beyonce, and Miley Cyrus.
In addition to the awards, SiriusXM launched the 'Billboard Music Awards Channel' to celebrate the biggest chart hits of 2023. The channel, which aired on the SiriusXM App and on satellite channel 11 until November 20, featured music from various genres and highlighted the finalists of the 2023 Billboard Music Awards.
