In the hotly contested Republican primary races in Virginia, two candidates have emerged as frontrunners: Bob Good and John McGuire. Good, the incumbent House Freedom Caucus Chair, is facing off against McGuire, a Virginia state senator and former Navy SEAL. The race has been characterized by deep divisions within the House GOP and MAGA movement.
Good initially supported Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the presidential primary but later switched his endorsement to Trump after DeSantis dropped out. McGuire, on the other hand, received support from various factions of the Republican Party and over $14.5 million in outside spending.
Despite this significant financial backing for McGuire, Good has managed to keep the race close. The primary battle has exposed personal beefs and petty arguments within the House GOP rather than ideological differences.
Several House Republicans endorsed McGuire, labeling Good as an inconsiderate colleague. McCarthy's allies sought revenge on Good for voting to depose him as Speaker, while Trump endorsed McGuire after Good initially supported DeSantis.
As of now, the results are too close to call with each candidate trading leads. The outcome of this race will have significant implications for the House GOP and could potentially cause turmoil in the House before the fall election.
In another key primary race, Hung Cao won the Republican Senate primary in Virginia with 65.6% of the votes, setting him up to challenge Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine in November.
Republicans believe they have a shot to flip Virginia's 7th Congressional District from blue to red.
