Boeing's Starliner Set for History-Making First Crewed Flight Test on May 6

Boeing's Starliner spacecraft is set to make history with its first crewed flight test, scheduled for launch on Monday, May 6. The spacecraft, atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, has rolled into place at Space Launch Complex 41 for the upcoming mission. NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will be on board for the test drive and weeklong stay at the International Space Station. This is the first crewed flight of Boeing's Starliner capsule, marking a significant milestone in space travel.

Boeing has received over $4 billion from NASA to develop the Starliner capsule, while SpaceX received $2.6 billion for its Crew Dragon program. The successful launch and return of astronauts on both vehicles will provide critical redundancy for lift up to the ISS from American soil.

The two-phase mission, which includes an energetic launch with humans on board, is a challenging endeavor. Jim McMichael, Boeing's program manager for Starliner, acknowledges the importance of this mission: “There's no doubt about that,” he said. “We introduce the human.”

Once certified by NASA, Starliner will provide essential redundancy for lift up to the ISS from American soil and join SpaceX's Crew Dragon on six-month rotations.

Boeing has managed only a pair of unoccupied test flights so far. The long-awaited astronaut demo is slated for liftoff on May 6, 2024.
