Caitlin Clark, the highly anticipated rookie in the WNBA, made her home debut for the Indiana Fever against the New York Liberty on May 16, 2024. The sellout crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse was eager to see Clark in action after an impressive college career at Iowa. However, things did not go as planned for Clark and the Fever as they lost to the Liberty with a score of 102-66.
Clark finished the game with nine points, seven rebounds, and six assists. She struggled to make shots from both the field and three-point range, shooting 2 of 8 from the field and 1 of 7 from beyond the arc. Her performance was a stark contrast to her debut against the Connecticut Sun where she scored 20 points but had a high number of turnovers.
The Liberty were led by Breanna Stewart who dominated with a game-high 31 points, along with ten rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Jonquel Jones also contributed to the win with a double-double of 14 points and ten rebounds.
Despite the loss, Clark remained optimistic about her performance and the team's progress. She acknowledged that adjusting to the physicality and speed of professional basketball would take time but was determined to continue learning and improving.
The Fever will face the Liberty again on May 19 in New York. With a young roster, their focus is on continuing to learn and grow as a team.
