Cameron Young made history on Saturday at the Travelers Championship by shooting a 59, the first sub-60 round on the PGA Tour in nearly four years. The 27-year-old golfer from Texas opened with a birdie-birdie start and went on to make two eagles during his bogey-free round.
Young's first eagle came at the par-4 third hole, where he holed out with a wedge shot from 142 yards. His second eagle came at the drivable par-4 15th hole, where he drove the ball onto the green and made a putt for birdie.
Young's round of 11 under par tied Jim Furyk's record for the lowest score in PGA Tour history. Furyk shot a 58 at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut back in 2016 during the Travelers Championship.
This is the 13th sub-60 round since Al Geiberger first achieved it at the Memphis Classic in 1977. Scottie Scheffler was the most recent golfer to shoot a sub-60 round, which he did at TPC Boston in 2020 during The Northern Trust.
Young's impressive performance came despite soggy course conditions and the potential for rain. He was able to lift, clean, and place his golf ball in the short grass to improve his lies.
Despite missing birdie opportunities on par-3 16th and par-4 18th holes that could have tied or broken Furyk's record, Young still finished the day with a score of 13 under par, tied for the lead with Tom Kim before the leaders teed off.
Joaquin Niemann shot a 59 in LIV Golf and Cristobal del Solar recorded a record-tying 57 on the Korn Ferry Tour this year. However, Young's round at TPC River Highlands is considered the most significant due to its status as the first sub-60 round on the PGA Tour since Al Geiberger's record in 1977.
