Canadian Border Workers Set Deadline for Job Action Amidst Ongoing Negotiations with CBSA

Canadian border workers have set a deadline for job action if no agreement is reached with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) by June 14, 2024. More than 9,000 workers represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Customs and Immigration Union are in negotiations over wages and benefits that have been pending since their last contract expired in June 2022. If an agreement is not reached, workers may implement work-to-rule practices instead of a typical strike, which could cause significant delays at border crossings across the country. In 2021, similar job action nearly brought commercial cross-border traffic to a standstill and caused major disruptions. The CBSA has stated that essential services must provide uninterrupted border services and employees cannot intentionally slow down processing. The Public Service Alliance of Canada's national president, Sharon DeSousa, expressed hope that an agreement can be reached to avoid potential disruptions at Canada's borders.
