Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has condemned the recent incidents of violence at two Jewish schools in Montreal, Canada. The incidents, which involved shots being fired, resulted in no injuries. The Prime Minister expressed concern over the rise in anti-Semitic instances across the country, as well as an increase in Islamophobia, which he said was directed against Palestinians and anyone waving a Palestinian flag.

The incidents at the Jewish schools followed a violent altercation at Concordia University between individuals aligned with opposing sides of the Israel-Gaza conflict. This altercation resulted in injuries and an arrest. In Toronto, hate crimes against Jews and Muslims have more than doubled since the initial Hamas attack on Oct. 7.

The police chief of Toronto, which has the largest Jewish and Muslim populations in Canada, reported a significant rise in hate crimes, with reports increasing by over 100% during the majority of October compared to the same time the previous year. This rise in hate crimes is a cause for concern and has been condemned by the Prime Minister.

In related news, Israel has agreed to pauses in its offensive in northern Gaza, allowing civilians to flee heavy fighting. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ruled out any broader ceasefire. Tens of thousands of civilians have fled northern Gaza, with the UN estimating hundreds of thousands remain in the fiercest battle zones.
