Cardinals, Dodgers, and White Sox Engage in Blockbuster Trade: St. Louis Acquires Fedde and Pham, Dodgers Get Edman and Kopech

In a major three-team trade, the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago White Sox have swapped several players to bolster their rosters. The Cardinals acquired starting pitcher Erick Fedde and outfielder Tommy Pham from the White Sox in exchange for utility player Tommy Edman and reliever Michael Kopech. The Dodgers obtained Edman and Kopech from the Cardinals, while the White Sox received infielder Miguel Vargas, Jeral Perez, and Alexander Albertus from the Dodgers.

The Cardinals were in search of starting pitching to bolster their rotation as they push for a playoff spot. Fedde has had a solid season with the White Sox, going 7-4 with a 3.11 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 21 starts.

Pham, who was once a Cardinal from 2014 to 2018, returns to St. Louis as a right-handed bat off the bench.

The Dodgers acquired Edman, who can play all over the infield and outfield. He is expected to fill in at third base and shortstop while Max Muncy, Mookie Betts, and Miguel Rojas remain out of the lineup. Additionally, Edman can provide versatility as a center fielder with Andy Pages continuing to struggle defensively.

Kopech has struggled this season in his transition to the bullpen but brings a high strikeout rate and whiff percentage. The Dodgers are likely excited about his potential as a dominant high-leverage arm.

The White Sox received Vargas, Perez, and Albertus from the Dodgers. Vargas is considered a high-upside hitter with defensive limitations, while Perez and Albertus were obtained out of the international market and had been playing at the Dodgers' Single-A affiliate together.

The Cardinals dealt with financial constraints this season and sent out as much payroll as they were taking back in any potential deal. They traded what was remaining of Edman's $8 million salary for what was left of Fedde's $7.5 million due in 2025.

Fedde pitched in Korea last season to try and get his career back on track and has a 3.11 ERA over 21 starts with the White Sox this year.

Edman, who was acquired by the Cardinals in 2019, has yet to play for them this season due to surgery on his right wrist and a right ankle sprain.
