Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca Shot and Killed Off Duty in Gage Park: Six-Year Veteran Dies at Age 30

A Chicago police officer, Luis Huesca, was shot and killed while driving home from his shift in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side of Chicago early Sunday morning. The shooting occurred around 3 a.m., and Huesca was found outside with gunshot wounds in the 3100 block of West 56th Street.

Huesca, a six-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, was wearing his uniform but had something covering it up as he was off duty at the time. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. No suspects have been identified in the case yet and it's unclear whether Huesca fired in self-defense.

Huesca attended the police academy alongside Officer Andrés Vásquez Lasso, who was fatally shot in the line of duty last year. He was just two days shy of his 31st birthday.

The shooting scene was initially reported to authorities through a ShotSpotter alert around 2:53 a.m. in the 5500 block of South Kedzie Avenue, and officers responded to find Huesca outside with gunshot wounds.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his condolences on Twitter, stating that 'Another sad day for the Chicago Police Department.'

Huesca is survived by his mother and an uncle.
