According to reports from Xinhua news agency and the Ministry of Emergency Management, rescue efforts are ongoing with over 800 people, 93 vehicles, 41 drones, 20 boats and a sonar system involved. Both Chinese President Xi Jinping and second-highest leader Li Qiang have ordered all-out rescue efforts.

The bridge in question is located in Zhashui County, Shangluo City, Shaanxi Province. The collapse occurred due to heavy rain and flash flooding on Friday evening. According to the latest reports, 12 bodies and seven vehicles have been recovered from the scene.

The previous disaster occurred in May also amid heavy rain and resulted in at least 48 deaths after a section of expressway gave way due to a landslide.

China's extensive network of newly built expressways has faced challenges with extreme weather conditions, leading to several incidents over the past few months. The Ministry of Emergency Management has urged local governments across China to pay more attention to identifying and dealing with such risks.
