CLEVELAND CAVALIERS HEAD COACH J.B. BICKERSTAFF DISSMISSED AFTER FOUR SEASONS AND TWO STRAIGHT PLAYOFF APPEARANCES
The Cleveland Cavaliers have dismissed head coach J.B. Bickerstaff after more than four seasons with the team, following a second-round elimination from the NBA playoffs.
Bickerstaff joined the Cavs as associate head coach prior to the 2019-20 season and took over as interim head coach in early 2020. He signed a multi-year contract extension by December 2021.
During his tenure, Bickerstaff led the Cavaliers to three consecutive seasons of improvement, with a record of 170-159 (.517). The team reached the playoffs in back-to-back years and advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals for the first time since 2018.
The Cavaliers finished the 2022-23 season with a record of 51-31, which was their first 50-win campaign since LeBron James' final year with the team in 2017-18. They also had the NBA's best defensive rating (109.9) and eighth-best offensive rating (115.5).
Despite these accomplishments, Bickerstaff was dismissed following a second-round elimination from the playoffs against the Boston Celtics.
The Cavaliers are now in search of a new head coach to lead their talented roster, which includes All-Star guards Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland and a frontcourt of Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley.
Bickerstaff's dismissal came as a surprise to many, given the team's recent success. However, rumors of tension in the locker room had been circulating throughout the season. It is unclear at this time who will be considered for the vacant head coaching position.
