Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have taken opposing stances regarding the timeline for a report on security breakdowns leading to a former president's assassination attempt and the impeachment of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.
On July 23, 2024, Mace filed an impeachment resolution against Cheatle in the House of Representatives for high crimes and misdemeanors. She accused Cheatle of dereliction of duty following her acknowledgment that the events of July 13, 2024, were the most significant operation failure in Secret Service history during a hearing on July 22.
Ocasio-Cortez expressed dissatisfaction with a projected 60-day timeline for an initial report on security breakdowns leading to the assassination attempt against former President Trump. She noted ongoing presidential campaigns and upcoming elections, stating that decisions need to be made before any report is finalized.
Mace's impeachment resolution forces the House to take up the measure within two legislative days. The House is in session until midday on Thursday.
Cheatle testified that an internal mission assurance investigation is targeted to be complete within 60 days, but she also stated that she has not waited for a report to take action. Additional investigations are ongoing by the Department of Justice and a bipartisan, independent panel.
It is unclear who decided that the warehouse roof where the gunman used as a sniper's perch should be outside the Secret Service's security perimeter for Trump's rally in Butler, Pa. Cheatle indicated that the agency preferred sterile rooftops and planning for overwatch from another location.
