CPSC Issues Warning and Recalls on High-Powered Magnetic Ball Sets Linked to Ingestion Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a stern warning to consumers to immediately stop using and dispose of certain high-powered magnetic ball sets due to the risk of serious injury or death if ingested by children. The products in question are Allvre's 216 Piece 5mm Magnetic Ball Sets and XpressGoods' colorful metal magnetic balls, both of which were sold online at temu.com from April 2023 through May 2023.

The CPSC has linked seven deaths to the ingestion of these small, high-powered magnets. The agency estimates that between 2017 and 2021, there were approximately 2,400 emergency room visits related to magnet ingestions. The magnets, which are stronger than permitted by federal toy regulations, can attract each other or other metal objects when swallowed, becoming lodged in the digestive system and causing serious injuries or even death.

In addition to the recall of the Allvre and XpressGoods products, the CPSC has issued warnings about similar products from five other companies. However, most of these manufacturers have not agreed to recall their products or offer a remedy to customers. The CPSC is urging families to throw away these products immediately to prevent further incidents.

It's worth noting that magnetic toys like these were previously banned by the CPSC in 2012, but the ban was later lifted by a federal court. The recent incidents and the subsequent warnings and recalls have reignited concerns about the safety of these products.
