In a major move for the NBA offseason, three teams have completed a sign-and-trade deal that sees DeMar DeRozan join the Sacramento Kings. The Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs were also involved in the trade.
DeRozan's departure from the Bulls leaves a new direction for teams still looking to make moves, while Chicago continues its efforts to trade Zach LaVine with two second-round picks as potential assets. The Kings, on the other hand, are counting on DeRozan and veteran additions like him to lead them back to the playoffs after being eliminated in the play-in tournament last season.
The three-team deal was officially announced by press releases from all involved teams. According to reports, Sacramento acquired DeRozan from Chicago while sending Chris Duarte, two second-round picks and cash considerations to the Bulls. In addition, Barnes was traded from the Kings to the Spurs in exchange for RaiQuan Gray and a right to swap first-round picks in 2031.
DeRozan had an extremely productive three seasons with the Bulls, averaging 25.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game during that time.
Barnes joins Chris Paul as veteran offseason additions in San Antonio, while DeRozan's new contract is worth approximately $76MM over three years with All-Star bonuses and $49MM guaranteed money in the first two seasons.
The Kings are excited about their new acquisition and believe that this group can lead them back to the playoffs. Fans at Golden 1 Center welcomed DeRozan with a standing ovation when he signed his contract on July 7, 2024.
Jordan McLaughlin also agreed to a one-year deal with the Kings on the same night as DeRozan's signing, and Malik Monk re-signed with the team after declining more money elsewhere in free agency.
