Two climbers, one from New York named Robbi Mecus and her climbing partner from California, experienced a tragic incident while attempting to ascend Mount Johnson in Denali National Park and Preserve on Thursday night. The pair were tackling the steep and technical route known as 'the Escalator,' which involves a mix of rock, ice, and snow on the southeast face of the 8,400-foot peak.

Witnessed by another climbing party around 10:45 pm, Robbi Mecus fell approximately 1,000 feet to her death. Her partner sustained serious injuries in the fall. The responding team dug a snow cave and attended to the injured climber throughout the night.

The following morning, Denali National Park's high-altitude rescue helicopter pilot and two mountaineering rangers were dispatched from Talkeetna to recover the body of Robbi Mecus and assist her injured partner. The ranger was short-hauled to the climbers, who were then transported out of the snow cave and flown back to Talkeetna for further medical care.
