Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen Assaulted in Copenhagen: No Motive Identified Before EU Elections

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was assaulted in Copenhagen on June 8, 2024. According to reports, the attacker was arrested at the scene but no motive has been identified yet. The incident occurred just two days before Denmark votes in the European Union elections.

Frederiksen's office released a statement saying she was 'shocked' by the assault and had no outward signs of harm. Witnesses reported that she was hit by a man who then walked away, leaving her sitting on a café terrace.

The attack comes less than a month after Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot several times as he greeted supporters. He survived and has since undergone surgery.

Frederiksen, 46, became Denmark's youngest prime minister in 2019 after taking over as leader of the centre-left Social Democrats four years earlier. She has been embroiled in controversies including a spat with former US President Donald Trump over his idea of buying Greenland and criticism from a commission investigating her government's decision to cull millions of mink during the Covid pandemic.

The assault on Frederiksen was condemned by European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, who called it a 'despicable act.' Danish Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke also expressed his shock and concern for the prime minister's wellbeing.

Police are investigating the incident further and have asked for any witnesses to come forward with information.
