Des Moines Battles Mosquitoes Testing Positive for West Nile Virus: Clarke Sprays Highland Park and Union Park

In recent developments, mosquitoes in Des Moines have tested positive for the West Nile Virus. This has led to an increase in spraying and treatment throughout the city. The positive mosquitoes were discovered in Service District B, which consists of Highland Park and Union Park. Clarke Mosquito Control and Management, which contracts with the city to control mosquito population, sprayed District B on June 10 to help reduce the adult mosquito populations that may transmit the virus. As a proactive measure, Clarke also sprayed District A - which consists of Drake, Beaverdale and Merle Hay - on June 11. There are no confirmed positive cases in humans or pets.

Mosquito populations in Des Moines have increased due to recent wet conditions. Some mosquitoes in the northside near the Riverview and Union Park areas have tested positive for West Nile virus. Mosquitoes buzz around every summer, but recent wet conditions have created perfect breeding grounds for floodwater mosquitoes, increasing pests compared to the last four years of drought.

Clarke Mosquito Control and Management is spraying neighborhoods in sections based on which areas have the highest numbers of mosquitoes in traps. There are no known cases yet in people or pets. Residents can report high levels of insects, learn when their neighborhood is being sprayed, or opt out of treatments on the Clarke Mosquito Control and Management website.

To protect oneself from mosquito bites, it is recommended to wear bug repellent, long-sleeved apparel or stay inside during peak pest hours, dusk and dawn. The city began its annual mosquito treatment on May 6 by spraying bodies.
