The 38th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, was a night of firsts and significant moments. The event was livestreamed for the first time, allowing fans worldwide to witness the induction of a diverse group of artists.
Among the inductees were Rage Against The Machine, with band member Tom Morello making a political statement by posing in the press room with a paper reading 'cease fire'. This gesture was seen as an overture to the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Gaza.
The Class of 2023 inductees also included Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Willie Nelson, The Spinners, DJ Kool Herc, Link Wray, Chaka Khan, Al Kooper, Bernie Taupin, and Don Cornelius. The ceremony was marked by a strong representation of women and Black artists, reflecting a shift in the Hall of Fame's recognition of diverse talents.
Missy Elliott made history by becoming the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the rock hall. Kate Bush, who could not attend the ceremony, expressed her gratitude via social media. The event also saw a surprise appearance by Jimmy Page to induct Link Wray.
The induction ceremony came after the hall removed Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner from its board of directors, following controversial comments about Black and female musicians. A special featuring highlights from the event is set to stream on Disney+ on Jan. 1, 2024.
