Donald Glover, the Emmy and Grammy award-winning actor, musician, and writer, has announced that he will be retiring his musical alter ego Childish Gambino. The news comes ahead of the release of his sixth album under the moniker, titled 'Bando Stone & The New World', which is set to drop on July 19, 2024. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Glover explained that he no longer finds it fulfilling to continue using the Childish Gambino name and that this album will mark the end of the project.
Glover first gained attention in the hip-hop blogosphere in 2010 and has since released several critically acclaimed albums, including 'Because The Internet' (2013) and 'Awaken, My Love!' (2016). His single 'Redbone' from the latter album won him his first Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
The new album is expected to be a wide-scale release with anthemic songs that fill big rooms and create a sense of togetherness. Glover has been open about his experiences in the music industry, including clashing with record labels over marketing and promotion of his music. He also mentioned that around the time of 'This Is America', which won him multiple Grammys, he both lost his father and welcomed a second child, making him more reflective.
Glover's acting career has been successful as well, with notable roles in shows like 'Atlanta' and movies such as 'The Lion King'. He recently starred in the Amazon Prime Video series 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith'.
Despite his decision to retire Childish Gambino, Glover remains active in the entertainment industry through his production company and acting projects.
