Donald Sutherland, a revered and prolific actor known for his roles in films such as Klute, MASH, Ordinary People, The Hunger Games franchise, and many others throughout his six-decade career, passed away on June 20, 2024 at the age of 88 in Miami after a long illness. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada,
Sutherland's acting talent and ability to assimilate into any role was an inspiration for his son Kiefer Sutherland. Despite not being present much as a father when Kiefer was young, Donald expressed pride in his son's accomplishments.
In some of his most notable roles, Sutherland perfected a laconic, wry and dead-serious delivery. He starred as the cool-headed amateur murder investigator John Klute opposite Jane Fonda's call girl Bree Daniels in Klute (1971). In MASH (1970), he played Hawkeye Pierce alongside Elliott Gould's Trapper John.
Sutherland also left a mark on the film industry as the father of Emmy-winning actors Kiefer Sutherland and Roeg Sutherland. He is survived by his sons Rossif, Angus, and daughter Rachel.
Throughout his career, he appeared in over 200 film and TV credits. His versatility was showcased in films such as Animal House, The Hunger Games franchise, Pride & Prejudice (2005), Forsaken (where he worked with Kiefer), and many more.
Sutherland's cause of death was not disclosed. A private celebration of life will be held by the Sutherland family.
