Dragon Quest III Remake Announced with HD-2D Graphics: Coming Soon to Multiple Platforms

Dragon Quest III, the classic role-playing game originally released in 1988, is set to be remade using Square Enix's HD-2D style. The announcement was made on Dragon Quest Day 2024 with a teaser video confirming that the game will be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The HD-2D style was first introduced in Octopath Traveller and has since been used in several other titles such as Triangle Strategy and Live A Live remake.

The teaser video does not reveal much else about the game except that it is coming soon. Series creator Yuji Horii had a meeting about Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, but no new information was shared regarding its development status or release date.

Square Enix has been using the HD-2D style in several titles since Octopath Traveller's release in 2018. The graphics contributed to Octopath Traveler's high review score from IGN, which praised the game for pushing JRPGs forward rather than simply paying homage to the classics.

The legacy of Dragon Quest III begins anew with this remake. More information about the game is expected to be revealed soon.

No formal fallacies detected. Some inflammatory rhetoric and a slight appeal to authority. The author mentions the 'string of titles' using Square Enix's HD-2D tech, which could be seen as an appeal to authority for the quality of the remake, and uses phrases like 'serious visual upgrade' and 'nearly three decades after the original game arrived in 1988'. The author also mentions series creator Yuji Horii's playtesting without providing further context or implications. However, these instances are not significant enough to warrant a lower score.
    • Since Square Enix started using its distinctive HD-2D tech with Octopath Traveller, the company has put it to use in a string of titles, including that game's sequel, Triangle Strategy, the Live A Live remake and Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster's opera scene.
    • The new version may not be too far away either. The teaser suggested that the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake "draws near," several months after series creator Yuji Horii said he was playtesting it.
    • Square Enix released the teaser on Dragon Quest Day, which marks the anniversary of the very first game in the series debuting in Japan in 1986.

The author makes several statements that are true and do not contain any fallacies. However, there are a few instances of inflammatory rhetoric and an appeal to authority. The author expresses excitement about the upcoming Dragon Quest games and encourages readers to share their thoughts with him on social media. This is an example of an appeal to emotion, which can be manipulative but does not necessarily contain a logical fallacy. The author also mentions the passing of Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama as a reason for potential delays in the development of Dragon Quest XII, implying that their involvement was crucial to the series. This is an example of an appeal to authority, as the author is suggesting that because these individuals have been involved in previous games, their absence will negatively impact the new game.
