An emergency slide fell off a Delta Air Lines Boeing 767 jetliner shortly after takeoff from JFK Airport in New York on April 26, 2024. The incident occurred on multiple Delta flights, including Flight 520 to Los Angeles.
According to reports, pilots heard an unusual sound coming from the right side of the plane and received alerts about the emergency slide. In response, they declared an emergency and safely landed the planes back at JFK Airport under their own power.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was notified of a vibration reported by the pilots. The agency is currently investigating the incidents.
All passengers were put on other flights to continue their journeys. Delta Air Lines removed the affected planes from service for evaluation and cooperated with investigators in finding the missing slides.
The Boeing 767 jets involved in these incidents were manufactured in 1990 and have a seating capacity of up to 223 passengers, including crew members. The emergency slides are designed to deploy when needed, providing a safe exit for passengers during emergencies.
This is not the first time an emergency slide has fallen off a plane during flight. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, raising concerns about maintenance and safety procedures.
Delta Air Lines stated that their top priority is the safety of their customers and crew members. They are fully cooperating with investigations to determine the cause of these incidents.
