Emma Hayes, the new coach of the US Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT), arrived in America on May 23, 2024, after leading Chelsea FC to five consecutive English Women's Super League titles. Hayes expressed that she doesn't have time for a break due to the upcoming Olympics and has scheduled one-on-one meetings with players to assess their skill sets and tactical understanding. She will name her 18-woman roster for the Olympics after just two friendlies and a few training sessions.
Born in England, Hayes spent more than 20 years dreaming of becoming the USWNT manager. She spent seven years coaching in the United States, including boys' youth teams and a women's semipro team. Hayes was Megan Rapinoe's first professional coach with the Chicago Red Stars from 2008-10.
Hayes has a history of success in England, having won seven league titles, five FA Cups, two League cups, and a Champions League win. She accepted the USWNT job in December 2023.
The USWNT is seeking the right balance between veterans and young talent for their roster for the Olympics. Team USA is set to play Zambia in Nice on July 25.
Hayes left England as the most accomplished and arguably the most beloved club manager in soccer's history. She was particularly popular with Chelsea supporters, and the love affair was mutual.
The USWNT has a rich history of success, having won four Olympic gold medals and four FIFA World Cup titles. However, they were eliminated in the round of 16 at the last World Cup tournament in Australia. Hayes's debut on the sidelines will be June 1 against South Korea at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce, Colorado.
Despite her success and popularity, Hayes remains humble and focused on her new role with the USWNT. She is determined to help restore the team to its former glory.
