The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has escalated, with recent Israeli airstrikes reported in Gaza. According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza, the Palestinian death toll has reached 9,227. In Israel, more than 1,400 people have been killed, most of them in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that initiated the current round of fighting.
One of the recent airstrikes targeted an ambulance outside Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital, resulting in multiple casualties. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed responsibility for the strike, stating that the ambulance was being used by Hamas. This claim has been met with skepticism as no evidence was provided to support it. The attack reportedly killed at least 15 people and wounded 50 others.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territories expressed shock and alarm at the reports of attacks on ambulances. The WHO also warned of a fuel shortage for generators, risking patients' lives. It was reported that 16 hospitals across Gaza are no longer functioning due to damage from Israeli strikes and lack of fuel.
In the midst of this crisis, Japan announced $65 million in humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip, and Indonesia dispatched humanitarian aid. However, the average Palestinian in Gaza is reportedly surviving on two pieces of bread a day, and only one of three water supply lines from Israel is operational.
In a separate incident, a school hosting displaced civilians and people evacuating south was also hit by Israel, according to the ministry, killing at least 20 and 14 people respectively.
