EU Designates iPadOS as a Gatekeeper Platform: Users to Gain More App and Browser Choices on iPads

Apple has confirmed that widespread changes, which were previously introduced for iPhones in the European Union (EU), will also be applied to iPads this fall. The EU has designated iPadOS as a gatekeeper platform under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), giving users more options and flexibility when it comes to downloading apps and using browsers on their devices.

The changes include the ability for users in the EU to download apps from alternative marketplaces instead of just the Apple App Store. Users can also choose their preferred browser, not limited to WebKit, as a default option. Additionally, contactless payments can be made using more methods than just Apple Wallet and Apple Pay on iPadOS through APIs enabling developers to use NFC technology in banking and wallet apps throughout the European Economic Area.

Apple has six months to ensure that iPadOS complies with the DMA. The EU opened an investigation into whether iPadOS should be classified as a gatekeeper due to its importance as a platform for business users, which could incentivize users from switching to other operating systems on tablets.

The Digital Markets Act was introduced with the intention of preventing monopoly abuses and promoting competition in digital markets. The DMA requires that big corporations open up their gatekeeper platforms to third parties, allowing alternative marketplaces and app stores to exist. This move could change the game for iPad users in the EU, giving them more choices and control over their devices.

Forbes reported that Apple introduced these changes reluctantly for iPhones in the EU earlier this year. The changes were met with criticism from some developers, who argued that they would face additional costs and complexities as a result of having to distribute apps through multiple app stores instead of just the App Store. However, other developers have welcomed the opportunity to reach more users and expand their businesses.

The EU's decision to classify iPadOS as a gatekeeper platform follows its designation of iOS in September 2023. The DMA applies to platforms with annual revenues exceeding €7.5 billion or market caps above €75 billion, and which have more than 45 million monthly active users and over 10,000 active business users within the EU.
