In the early morning hours of May 18, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred in the southwest suburban village of Bridgeview, Illinois. The victim was identified as Arturo Cantu, a 39-year-old man who was leaving his apartment building near the intersection of 79th Street and Oketo Avenue around 5 a.m.
Two individuals have been charged in connection with the shooting: Anthony Calderon, a 20-year-old man from Bedford Park, and Agnieszka Rydzewski, a 33-year-old woman who lived with Cantu in the same apartment building. Calderon has been charged with first-degree murder, while Rydzewski has been charged with solicitation to commit murder.
According to reports from various sources, including Bridgeview Police and the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, evidence suggests that Rydzewski and Calderon were involved in a romantic relationship. The two allegedly plotted Cantu's murder together.
On the day of the shooting, Cantu was approached by Calderon as he was remote-starting his car outside the apartment building. A confrontation ensued, resulting in Cantu being shot multiple times and collapsing near the entrance of the building. He died at the scene.
Calderon was arrested later that day, and Rydzewski was taken into custody on Saturday after evidence of her involvement in the plot was discovered.
The investigation is ongoing, with Bridgeview Police working to determine a motive for the shooting and gather additional evidence. The incident is believed to be isolated, but authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
Calderon and Rydzewski are expected in court in the coming days.
