The resurgence of compact discs (CDs) and the nostalgia for classic audio players like the Discman have led Chinese audio gear maker Fiio to announce its latest product: a portable CD player named DM13. The device, which will be available in September for $179, offers modern upgrades that were not present in the original Discman.
One of the most significant improvements is Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to connect wireless headphones or speakers. The DM13 supports various Bluetooth codecs such as aptX HD, AptX Low Latency, and SBC. For those who prefer wired connections, the player offers 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs.
The DM13 also includes a rechargeable battery that provides up to eight hours of playback time on a single charge. It can be integrated into a home stereo system using analog, SPDIF, and USB audio connections or used in desktop mode by bypassing the battery and connecting it to a permanent power source.
The DM13 is not limited to playing CDs; it also supports MP3, FLAC, WAV, AAC, and WMA audio files burned onto a CD-R. Electronic shock protection can be activated to buffer music and prevent skipping while carrying the player around.
Five different color options will be available for the DM13: silver, red, blue, black, and titanium. The device was first showcased at CES 2024 alongside Fiio's portable cassette player CP13.
