Two women, Veronica Butler and Jilian Kelley, went missing in Hugoton, Kansas on March 30, 2024. Their abandoned vehicle was later found near a highway in rural Texas County with evidence of severe injury. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) has arrested five suspects in connection to their disappearance and subsequent deaths.
The first four suspects, Tad Bert Cullum, 43; Tifany Machel Adams, 54; Cole Earl Twombly, 50; and Cora Twombly, 44 were arrested on April 14. They have each been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of kidnapping and one count of conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree.
The fifth suspect, Paul Grice, was arrested on April 24. He is also facing the same charges as the other four suspects. According to affidavits obtained by various news sources, Grice admitted his involvement in planning and carrying out the killings of Butler and Kelley.
Butler was reportedly involved in a bitter custody battle with Adams, her children's grandmother. The group allegedly responsible for the murders is believed to be an anti-government religious group called 'God's Misfits'.
The cause of death for both women is still pending.
Grice had previously attempted to kill Butler in February 2024 and on March 29, 2024. The motive behind the murders is believed to be related to the custody dispute.
Butler's memorial service will be held at the beginning of May, while Kelley's memorial will take place on April 28.
The OSBI continues to investigate this ongoing case.
