Duane Keith Davis, also known as 'Keffe D', pleaded not guilty to the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur.

Duane Keith Davis, also known as 'Keffe D', a former Southern California street gang leader, has pleaded not guilty to the 1996 murder of rap icon Tupac Shakur. Davis is the only person still alive who was in the vehicle from which shots were fired and the only person ever charged with a crime in the case. The indictment alleges Davis obtained and provided a gun to someone in the back seat of a Cadillac before the car-to-car gunfire that mortally wounded Shakur.

Davis has a history of involvement in the drug trade and has been in and out of prison for the past 40 years. The case against Davis was reinvigorated by his own accounts of his involvement in the shooting, leading to a search of his home in July. Davis was arrested Sept. 29 outside a home in suburban Henderson where Las Vegas police served a search warrant July 17.

Davis has publicly described his role in Shakur's death in interviews and a 2019 memoir. However, his arraignment had been delayed due to lack of legal representation, but he was represented by the public defender's office at the hearing. Davis lost his bid to hire Attorney Ross Goodman, who had pointed out that police and prosecutors do not have a murder weapon, the car used in the shooting, or witnesses from 27 years ago. Goodman criticized the lack of witnesses and key evidence in the case.

Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty in the case. Davis, 60, could not meet terms of an agreement that the judge gave two weeks to hash out. The judge could order a financial accounting of Davis's assets to determine whether he can afford a lawyer or should be declared indigent and have a public defender appointed.
