Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has issued a warning to the Republican Party, urging them to prepare for a potential replacement of President Joe Biden with a younger and more vibrant Democratic candidate. The call comes after concerns over Biden's age and health following his shaky performance in the first presidential debate against former President Donald Trump.
Haley, who previously ran against Trump for the Republican nomination, made her comments on social media, stating: "Mark my words....Biden will not be the Democrat nominee. Republicans, get your guard up!"
Some Democrats have also called for Biden to drop out of the race due to his debate performance.
Haley's warning comes as Democratic strategist David Axelrod expressed concern to GOP strategists that they would face trouble if Biden is replaced at the top of the Democratic ticket. Axelrod stated on CNN: "If, for whatever reason, there's a change at the top of the ticket, you guys are in trouble with Donald Trump."
Biden's debate performance raised concerns among his own party and voters. Operatives and pundits indicated that discussions were happening about Biden bowing out before the upcoming election. However, Biden's camp defended him as questions swirled around his position at the top of the Democratic ticket.
The first presidential debate between Biden and Trump took place on September 29, 2024. The second and final debate is scheduled for October 19, 2024.
