Former President Donald Trump faced a challenging crowd at the Libertarian National Convention on Saturday night as he tried to win over skeptical activists and turn them away from independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Trump, who is the presumptive Republican nominee, addressed the convention in an effort to unite libertarians and bring them into his camp. He promised that if elected, he would appoint a libertarian to his cabinet and place others in senior positions.
During his speech, Trump pledged to sign an executive order banning federal agencies from censoring free speech and introduce record tax cuts. He also received support for pledging to pardon the peaceful January 6 protesters, known as the hostages, and commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht.
However, Trump's efforts were met with skepticism and even boos from some in the crowd. The Libertarian National Convention is being held at the Washington Hilton hotel through Sunday with the tagline: 'Become Ungovernable.'
Trump tried to win over the crowd by saying: 'In the last year, I've been indicted, impeached, and censored. But we're not going to let that stop us. If we unite, we are unstoppable.'
Despite his efforts to appeal to libertarians, some in the crowd remained skeptical of Trump's commitment to small government and individual freedoms. The Libertarians will pick their White House nominee during their convention which wraps up on Sunday.
Trump's speech came as Joe Biden, the Democratic incumbent, continues to campaign for re-election. The political landscape is shifting with swing states this November becoming increasingly important in the race for the White House.
