Former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024. Two sources, Fox News and CNN, have reported on the incident with different details.
According to Fox News, New York Times photographer Doug Mills captured an iconic image of a bullet whizzing past Trump's head during the rally. The bullet grazed Trump's ear and caused him to react by reaching for his ear and looking at his hand which was covered in blood.
CNN reported that the shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, visited a shooting range two days before the attack where he practiced firing. On the day of the attack, Crooks bought a five-foot ladder and 50 rounds of ammunition at separate locations.
Both sources agree that Crooks legally purchased an AR-style rifle from his father and kept it at their home. The rifle was used in the shooting.
Witnesses warned police about a suspicious man on a nearby roof before the shooting, but authorities did not respond until after gunfire rang out.
Thomas Matthew Crooks graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022 and worked in a local nursing home kitchen before the shooting. He was shot dead by Secret Service agents at the scene.
The FBI is investigating the incident, and more information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
