Former School Resource Officer Elias Huizar, wanted for two homicides and the abduction of a 1-year-old boy named Roman Huizar, was located in Oregon with a self-inflicted gunshot wound on April 23, 2024. The incident occurred during a police chase on Interstate 5 near Eugene, Oregon.
According to reports from multiple sources including CNN and USA Today, Huizar is suspected of killing his ex-wife and girlfriend outside William Wiley Elementary School in West Richland, Washington on April 23. A second homicide victim was discovered at his residence during a search warrant execution later that day.
The investigation began when police responded to a shooting at Wiley Elementary School around 3:23 p.m. and found one woman dead outside the school. No other injuries were reported.
Huizar, who had recently been charged with second-degree rape, was identified as a suspect in the shooting and was wanted for two homicides at the time of his apprehension in Oregon.
The Amber Alert for Roman Huizar was issued on April 23 due to concerns that Huizar may be armed and dangerous. The alert described him as a 1-year-old boy with brown hair and brown eyes, and noted that he was last seen wearing a diaper.
Huizar is believed to have been traveling in a silver 2009 Toyota Corolla with Washington plates CBZ4745. The car was later located abandoned near the Oregon state line.
The West Richland Police Department and the Washington State Patrol are leading the investigation, with assistance from other law enforcement agencies including the Yakima Police Department and Oregon State Patrol.
Huizar's ex-wife, Amber Rodriguez, was reportedly shot eight times near the Wiley Elementary School bus parking lot. She had recently obtained a protection order against him.
The victims' identities have not been officially released by authorities. The Washington State Patrol and West Richland Police Department have asked anyone with information to contact them.
