A shooting at a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas on Friday left four people dead and nine others injured. The victims were identified as Shirley Taylor (62), Callie Weems (23), Roy Sturgis (50), and Ellen Shrum (81). Travis Eugene Posey, 44, of New Edinburg is expected to be charged with four counts of capital murder in connection with the shooting. The incident took place around 11:30 a.m. at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce.
Shirley Taylor's daughter, Angela Atchley, described her mother as a hardworking woman and great person who was killed at the checkout while doing her grocery shopping. Five women and two men were injured in the shooting, with four of them still hospitalized including one in critical condition. Two police officers were also wounded during the gunfire.
The country has seen a spate of shootings in recent weeks with at least 238 mass shootings recorded by Gun Violence Archive since last Friday. The Mad Butcher grocery store remains temporarily closed following the shooting, with a sign on the store reading 'Please pray for our community.'
The community of Fordyce has been left shaken by the tragedy, with many shoppers expressing fear and concern for their safety. One resident shopping at Walmart said, 'I think a lot of people are not ready to come out yet. They will eventually, but not right now. I think it may have brought a lot of fear on people.'
The suspect in the shooting, Travis Eugene Posey, is currently in police custody at the Ouachita County Detention Center.
