G7 leaders tackle migration at summit in Italy
Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) leading industrialized nations are discussing migration on the second day of their summit in Italy, seeking ways to combat trafficking and increase investment in countries from where migrants start out on often life-threatening journeys.
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni has been keen to increase investment and funding for African nations to reduce migratory pressure on Europe. According to UNHCR figures, more than 22,000 people have arrived in Italy by sea in 2024, and over 157,000 arrived in 2023.
The summit is also discussing other major topics such as financial support for Ukraine, the war in Gaza, artificial intelligence and climate change. However, some divisions have emerged over the wording of the summit's final declaration.
Former Israeli FM Tzipi Livni stated that you can't speak about toppling a regime without speaking about who will replace it. This comment comes as leaders discuss potential replacements for regimes in various countries, including Ukraine and Algeria.
Biden participated in a bilateral meeting at the G7 summit with Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni. The leaders discussed migration and investment in African nations to reduce migratory pressure on Europe.
Leaders are also discussing China's industrial policy and economic security, as well as climate change.
